Stress and Tooth Grinding
October 10, 2020
When you’re stressed, you’re more likely to clench your teeth — especially at night — or slide them back and forth over each other. Also called Bruxism, teeth grinding is a serious condition that shouldn’t be ignored. It can cause serious, chronic conditions if not treated.
Some of the symptoms of teeth grinding include:
Sleep disorders
Headaches
Jaw pain
Abnormal tooth wear
Broken or chipped teeth
TMJ disorder
Changes in the appearance of your face
The offices of Alamo Smiles can make you a custom bite guard that you can wear when you sleep to help treat your symptoms and protect you from the damages of teeth grinding.
Most Common Dental Emergencies
April 08, 2019
Knocked out tooth
In our blog, we cite a pretty surprising statistic: over five million teeth are knocked out annually in children and adults! Certainly, one of the most common dental emergencies, if you or a loved one experience a knocked-out tooth, don’t touch the root, rinse it off, transport the tooth in the socket If possible, see an emergency dentist as soon as possible.
Cracked or broken tooth
Maybe not as harrowing as a fully knocked out tooth, a cracked or broken tooth can be just as or even more painful. Coming to see an emergency dentist right after the incident may facilitate a quick repair and if not, at least help with pain management till a more permanent solution (veneers, crowns, bonding, dental implants) is possible.
Painful or infected tooth
Toothaches are often something many of us ignore or decide to “manage” until it becomes beyond unbearable. Then what was once a simple nuisance becomes a textbook dental emergency. Don’t wait till to get that toothache checked out till the pain is so intense you have no other choice. Be proactive about your dental heath! (If you are experiencing a toothache, check out our blog, “Toothache Types and What They Mean” for some additional information.)
5 Essential Tips for a Beautiful Smile
June 10, 2021
1. Visit your dentist.
Routine oral health exams are at the heart of keeping your mouth as healthy as possible. Most dentists recommend a scheduled appointment every six months.
2. Brush and floss — daily.
The ADA recommends brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes with a soft-bristled brush and flossing daily in between teeth to keep plaque at bay.
3. Eat healthy.
While sugary treats are great once in awhile, eating too many can lead to cavities and tooth decay.
4. Rinse with mouthwash.
Mouthwash does more than make your breath smell fresh. It also protects your teeth and gums by killing bacteria that can lead to gum disease.
5. Stop smoking.
The nicotine and tar in cigarettes not only turns your teeth yellow, they erode your gums. According to WebMD, “Smoking creates a ripe environment for bacteria and plaque on your teeth and along the gum line. That harms tissue, degrades the bone that supports teeth, and, eventually, increases your risk of tooth loss.”
